Top stats to know: Orioles & Royals lead 1-0

The American League Division Series kicked off on Thursday with a big win and a nail-biter. The Baltimore Orioles set a franchise record in a 12-3 rout of the Detroit Tigers while theKansas City Royals did something they’d never done before in a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels in 11 innings.

Nelson Cruz – Catch a Tiger by the toe
Nelson Cruz hit his 15th career postseason home run on Thursday, tying Babe Ruth for 10th all-time. It was also his seventh home run in seven postseason games against the Tigers. Cruz is 10-for-24 (.417) with 16 RBIs against the Tigers in the postseason in his career.

Orioles' big inning, big night
The Orioles scored 12 runs in their victory over the Tigers, a franchise record for runs in a postseason game. The effort was capped off by an eight-run eighth inning that lasted 34 minutes, 45 seconds. The eight runs are the most the Orioles have scored in a single postseason inning.

Tigers' back-to-back
Victor Martínez and J.D. Martinez hit consecutive home runs in the second inning to become just the second set of Tigers teammates to hit back-to-back postseason home runs, according to the Elias Sports Bureau research. The others are Don Kelly and Delmon Young, who did so in Game 5 of the 2011 ALDS against the New York Yankees

Mike Moustakas is the first
Mike Moustakas’ go-ahead home run in the 11th inning was the first extra-innings home run in franchise history. It also was first home run since Aug. 25 as he ended the season without a home run in his final 32 games, the fourth-longest homerless streak of his career.

Royals play extras again
The Royals are the first team since 1979 to play extra innings in consecutive games to open the postseason. In 1979, the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates played extra innings in the first two games of the National League Championship Series, with the Pirates winning both games.

What does a Game 1 win mean?
Since 1995, teams that win the first game of the ALDS have gone on to win the series only 61 percent of the time (23-of-38). However, 12 of the past 14 teams to win Game 1 of the ALDS have gone on to win the series. Furthermore, if either Kansas City or Baltimore can win Game 2, history is also in their favor, as each of the past 13 teams to take a 2-0 lead in the ALDS have gone on to advance to the championship series.
