Top stats to know: Mavericks-Warriors

The Golden State Warriors host the Dallas Mavericks at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Warriors will try to improve to 3-0 against the Mavericks this season.

Here are the top stats to know heading into the game.

Warriors
The Warriors enter Friday’s game at 47-12, ensuring their best 60-game start in franchise history even if they lose to the Mavericks.

Golden State leads the Western Conference by 4.5 games over the second-place Memphis Grizzlies, but the Warriors are just 5-3 since the All-Star break entering Friday’s game. Prior to the All-Star break, the Warriors were an NBA-best 42-9.

Stephen Curry’s MVP-caliber season has been a big part of that strong start. Curry ranks fifth in points per game (23.8), sixth in assists per game (7.8), first in 3-point field goals per game and first in steals per game (2.1) this season. Curry is averaging 25.6 points per game and shooting 51 percent from beyond the 3-point line in the seven games he’s played in since the All-Star break.

Curry scored 51 points the last time these two teams played, at Golden State on Feb. 4. The only other player who has ever scored more than 50 points against Dallas in a regulation game isKobe Bryant (62 points on Dec. 20, 2005), according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Friday’s game will be at the ORACLE Arena, where the Warriors are outscoring opponents by 15.6 points per game this season. That's nearly seven points better than the Trail Blazers, who rank second at plus-8.7 points per game at home. Only four teams in NBA history had a home points per game differential higher than 15.6, and three of those teams went on to win the NBA title.

The Warriors are an NBA-best 25-2 at home, including wins in 23 of their past 24 games at ORACLE Arena.

The Warriors’ offense has been on fire all season. They rank second in offensive efficiency and first in points per game (110.0). No team makes a higher percentage of its field goals than the Warriors (48 percent).

Mavericks
Dallas enters Friday’s game in sixth place in the Western Conference at 40-23. But are the Mavericks legitimate contenders? They are just 3-10 against the five teams ahead of them in the West, including 0-2 against the first-place Warriors. The Mavs have dropped five straight games to Golden State dating back to last season.

Rajon Rondo, who was traded to the Mavericks on Dec. 18, has zero free throw attempts over his past five games. Rondo’s last free throw attempt was on Feb. 20. His free throw percentage of 31 percent is on pace to be the worst ever by a guard in a single season (min. 50 FTA). Seattle’s Mark Radford currently holds that mark at 41 percent in the 1982-83 season.

According to Elias, Rondo’s struggles from the line are not as glaring as they might appear at first glance, considering that his average of 1.2 free throws per game this season is the sixth lowest among NBA players who have started at least 45 games.

The Mavericks hope to take a lead into the fourth quarter Friday, as they are 30–0 this season in games in which they led at the end of the third period. That’s the longest streak of its kind for any NBA team to begin a season since the Bulls started 2011–12 with 31 such wins, according to Elias.

Westbrook comes up big in OT win

The Oklahoma City Thunder edged the Philadelphia 76ers in overtime thanks to another incredible performance by Russell Westbrook. Let's take a closer look at his 49-point, 16-rebound, 10-assist game:

Westbrook recorded his league-leading sixth triple-double of the season (three more than the next player) and fourth straight, the longest streak since Michael Jordan had seven straight during the 1988-89 season. That is tied for the fourth-longest triple-double streak over the past 50 seasons. Wilt Chamberlain holds the record with nine straight during the 1967-68 season.

scored at least 40 points in a triple-double. According to Elias Sports Bureau research, only two other players accomplished that feat in NBA history: Michael Jordan and Pete Maravich.

His 49 points are tied with Larry Bird for the most in a triple-double over the past 30 seasons. He joins Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor as the only players with 49 points in a triple-double since 1963.

Westbrook has three triple-doubles this season in which he has scored at least 35 points. The rest of the NBA has combined to do so zero times.

Vince Carter is the only other player to post 45 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in a game over the past 30 seasons. He did so as a member of the Nets in a win against the Wizards in 2007.

Wednesday night marked the fifth time this season in which Westbrook was the Thunder's outright leader in points, rebounds and assists. He is the league leader in that department and all five games have come since this great run began to start February.

Westbrook finished with 10 assists, his 15th double-digit assist game of the season. Those 10 assists resulted in 23 Thunder points. Add the 49 points he scored, and Westbrook was responsible for 72 of his team's 123 points. That is the second-most points he has contributed in a game this season.

No real surprise Westbrook posted a triple-double against the 76ers. Including Wednesday night, Philadelphia has allowed a league-leading nine triple-doubles over the past two seasons. Westbrook has two of the nine.

Russell Westbrook impressive in defeat

The Oklahoma City Thunder came up short against the Chicago Bulls but Russell Westbrook had another impressive performance. He finished with 43 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, just missing out on becoming the fourth player in NBA history with a triple-double in five consecutive games.

and five assists in each of his last three games. That is tied for the second-longest streak in NBA history; only Elgin Baylor had a longer streak.

No one in the NBA has more 40-point games than Westbrook this season. Since Feb. 1, he has five games with at least 40 points. The rest of the league has six combined. Westbrook became the first player in franchise history with three straight 40-point games.

Westbrook is averaging more points, rebounds and assists per game without Kevin Durant this season. The numbers he is generating over his last nine games without the reigning MVP would make Oscar Robertson proud. Westbrook is averaging a triple-double over that stretch: 35.0 points, 10.7 assists and 10.4 rebounds.

Thursday recap
Westbrook scored more than half of his points when operating in a "one-man offense." He poured in 24 of his 43 points when starting the play behind the backcourt and finishing without passing. All five of his turnovers came when the offense included a pass.

Although he finished with 43 points, Westbrook struggled against E'Twaun Moore in the half court. He scored six points on 2-of-12 shooting and turned the ball over four times when guarded by Moore. Westbrook had 20 points and made 54 percent of his shots when guarded by the rest of the team.

Chasing history
Following his 49-point outburst Wednesday night, Westbrook overtook James Harden as the NBA scoring leader. He extended that lead Thursday night and now leads Harden by 0.45 points. If Westbrook wins this season's scoring title, it would mark only the second time in NBA history that one team had two different players lead the league in points per game in consecutive seasons. Hall of Famers Paul Arizon and Neil Johnston were the first to do so for the Philadelphia Warriors during the 1951-52 and 1952-53 seasons.

Westbrook has fully immersed himself into the MVP conversation. With Durant winning the award a season ago, they would join Bob Cousy and Bill Russell as the only set of teammates to be named MVP in consecutive seasons. The Celtics legends did so during the 1956-57 and 1957-58 seasons.

Kentucky's 'D' great in every way

Five stats to know from No. 1 Kentucky's 58-50 win over No. 4 Louisville.

1. Kentucky held Louisville to 25.9 percent shooting from the field. That's the worst single-game field-goal percentage for Louisville in the shot-clock era. The Cardinals were 8-of-24 from inside the paint. Montrezl Harrell was 4-of-7. The rest of the team was 4-of-17.

Louisville was also 2-of-13 on its second-chance opportunities. The Cardinals had averaged 19 second-chance points-per-game in the previous three games.

2. Louisville had 15 baskets, but managed only one assist. We have 19 seasons worth of game-by-game data on ranked teams. The one assist is the fewest by any ranked team in that 19-season span and the fewest by Louisville in the shot-clock era.

3. Since joining Kentucky in 2009-10, John Calipari has led the Wildcats to seven wins in eight games against Louisville, including three straight. Calipari is 12-9 against Rick Pitino. This was the 15th meeting of the two teams in which both were ranked in the AP Top 25. Kentucky is 14-1 in those games, 2-0 when both are ranked in the Top 5.

4. Kentucky did have one streak stopped. The Wildcats had won each of their first 12 games by double figures, the first time they had done that in school history.

5. According to BPI, Kentucky has a 33 percent chance to win out through the end of the regular season. Its toughest remaining game is at Georgia on March 3. The Wildcats have an 83 percent chance to win that one. They are not scheduled to face another ranked team this season.
