Tortorella's 5 keys for a Rangers win in Game 6

The New York Rangers are again facing elimination, trailing the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in the Eastern Conference finals, with Game 6 on tap from Tampa’s Amalie Arena on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET. If anyone knows about these two franchises, it’s former NHL coach John Tortorella, who won a Stanley Cup with the Bolts in 2004 and led the Blueshirts to the Eastern Conference finals in 2012. What is it going to take for the Rangers to save their season? Tortorella serves up some chalk talk with a few keys for the Rangers heading into Tuesday’s do-or-die game:
1. Special-teams savvy: “First of all, they need to score a power-play goal,” Tortorella told ESPN.com in a telephone conversation Tuesday afternoon. “That really hurt them last game; it really took some of their momentum away and they seemed to lose a little energy.”
The Rangers were blanked on all four power-play opportunities Sunday night after tallying a pair of man-up goals in each of their previous three games. Additionally, the Lightning did not allow a single shot from a "high-danger area" while short-handed, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
Power-play woes are nothing new for the Blueshirts -- Tortorella had to field questions about their much-maligned unit often during his tenure in New York -- but he expressed confidence they will find the back of the net in Game 6: “I know they will.”
2. Defense is key: Under Tortorella’s structured shot-blocking system, the Rangers developed a reputation as one of the stingiest defensive teams in the league. The club’s system has changed under coach Alain Vigneault to employ a more opportunistic, offensive approach, but that strong defensive identity remains the same, even though the Rangers finished third in the league in total offense (3.02 goals/game) during the regular season.
“They need to be who they are,” Tortorella said. “Everyone loves talking about offense, but you have to defend. ... They defend well and their offense comes off of that.”
This is where the Rangers need stalwarts Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh and Marc Staal rise to the occasion.
“They can't get too excited, and they won't,” Tortorella said. “This is a veteran group, they’re well-coached; they need to be themselves.”
3. Hank has to be Hank: The Rangers have long relied on goaltender Henrik Lundqvist as their backbone, and they need him now more than ever to play like the King. Lundqvist has been so steady in previous postseason runs that it was a shock to the system to see the Vezina Trophy winner surrender six goals in both Games 3 and 4. But if there is anything to know about the steady Swede, it is that he excels when the Rangers are facing elimination. That should give New York a sense of comfort heading into their biggest game of the postseason yet.
“I’ll just go on my own experience -- as the stakes get higher and the closer it gets to [the Stanley Cup finals], his game keeps rising,” Tortorella said. "He has to be the best player tonight, and I think he will be.”
4. Neutralize the opponent: Both clubs possess ample speed throughout their lineups, so it’s no surprise that, at times, this series has resembled a track meet. That’s not necessarily the sort of game the Rangers want to play, Tortorella said, especially since Tampa Bay’s offensive arsenal fuels a strong transition game, led by Tyler Johnson and his Triplets line.
“You let that little [Tyler] Johnson get going throughout that neutral zone, and you can't stop him,” Tortorella said.
Maintaining gaps, pressuring the defense and clogging up the neutral zone are essential to limiting the Lightning’s opportunities.
“You’re not going to control them completely,” Tortorella said. “But you have to inhibit them a little bit.”
5. Rely on experience: If nothing else, the Rangers can seek solace in the fact they have had their backs against the wall plenty of times before and emerged on the winning side. Knowing what to expect and how to stay calm with their season on the line should help bolster this group’s confidence.
Tortorella thinks Game 6 will be more defensive-minded than physical, considering what is at stake and the small margin for error. The Rangers know that they cannot afford to let emotions play a role and that discipline will be a key.
“They’re not going to get caught up in all the bulls--- of running around,” Tortorella said. "It’s such a close series that it’s whoever blinks first.”

Ducks put resiliency on display with Game 3 win

CHICAGO -- Instead of letting the past determine their future, the Anaheim Ducks revealed an inner fortitude that now has them halfway to a berth in the Stanley Cup finals.
Less than 48 hours after a crushing triple-overtime defeat in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals, the Ducks turned up in one of the loudest, most difficult buildings to play in and came away with a 2-1 victory that gives them a 2-1 series lead.
It was not particularly pretty at times.
The Ducks seemed to fall into a potentially destructive shell in the third period as they tried to nurse a one-goal lead across the finish line, relying on netminderFrederik Andersen to come up huge -- again -- as Chicago outshot Anaheim 10-5 in the third period.
And the pace was well off the dazzling to and fro that dominated the epic clash in Game 2.
But when it mattered most on Thursday night, the Ducks proved they were made of sterner stuff than could be deflated by a triple-overtime loss. And the battle-tested Blackhawks revealed that perhaps winning a game in triple overtime can be as taxing as losing one.
“I know a lot of people in here tried to keep things as simple as we possibly could,” said Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler, who had one of his strongest games of the playoffs in Game 3. "It’s never easy when you lose in three overtimes and you have a 3 1/2-hour flight here. I think there’s a lot of things that went into it, but I’m really proud of our guys for how we battled tonight. It took everyone out there, everyone contributed. So we’ll enjoy it tonight, but we have to make sure we improve for Saturday."
Fowler earned a secondary assist on Simon Despres' game-winning goal with 54.2 seconds left in the second period.
Despres slipped down the right side and blasted a low one-timer past Chicago netminder Corey Crawford and helped erase the memory of Tuesday’s gut-wrenching loss.
"I kind of took that night to just digest everything mentally, but when we came to the rink the next day we knew what we were up against," Fowler said. "We knew we had to start preparing for this game because the more you dwell on a loss like that it’s not going to do anything good for your group. I thought our resiliency was great tonight. It’s not easy to come in here and beat a great team like Chicago, especially at home."
While so much attention had been focused on the Ducks, how would they respond? Was Game 2 the kind of loss that sends a team off the rails for good? It turned out the Blackhawks were the ones out of sync.
It began with a couple of curious lineup changes as Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville added Kris Versteeg and Joakim Nordstrom in place of Antoine Vermette, a top trade-deadline acquisition for the Hawks, and Finnish rookieTeuvo Teravainen. The two new players combined for zero points and two shots on goal.
Quenneville insisted neither Teravainen nor Vermette was injured.
"We just wanted to get some fresh legs in there," Quenneville said.
Whether the lineup changes contributed to the Blackhawks' inability to get anything going offensively for much of the night -- they have scored just five times in three games and just three of those have come at even strength –- is impossible to tell, but if Quenneville was looking for a spark from the changes, it did not appear.
Not surprisingly, both teams were a bit gassed after Game 2, so it was a measure of the Ducks’ maturity that in spite of getting into penalty trouble, they didn't let the game get turned the opposite way and were outstanding playing down a man.
The Ducks were 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, including a double-minor for high sticking assessed to Jakob Silfverberg less than a minute after Patrick Maroongave the Ducks a 1-0 lead by deflecting a hard Hampus Lindholm shot past Crawford.
The other side of this coin, of course, is that the Blackhawks could not capitalize on these opportunities.
It was an uncharacteristic failure for a team that has forged a reputation as winners and champions by seizing these kinds of moments every spring.
"Had a lot of chances there, especially in the first period. Would have been nice to capitalize. Didn’t happen," said Patrick Sharp, who has yet to record a point in this series. "We’ll look at it in the next 24 hours and have an answer for you."
"Frustrating to the point that we lost. Frustrating because we had some opportunities, whether it was a power play or different chances and stuff to get ourselves back in the game," added Patrick Kane, who earned his first goal (and first point) of the series with a deft backhand after an ugly Anaheim turnover in the final minute of the first period.
"Other than that, we knew this was going to be a tough series, we knew this was a tough team. It’s tough to lose, especially at home. We’ve got to regroup here and make sure we’re ready for the next one."
The first part of this series has been about punch-counterpunch.
The Blackhawks responded after a 4-1 loss in Game 1 with a clutch triple-overtime win that knocked the Ducks from the ranks of the unbeaten at home in the playoffs. Now the Ducks have upped the ante by handing Chicago its first home playoff loss this spring.
"Two really good, experienced teams that know what it takes to win, no matter what building they’re in," Versteeg said.
"There’s no panic in here. We understand what we need to do. It’s a big game the next game to make it a best of three."
Would anyone be surprised if that’s exactly what happened on Saturday night?
Of course not.
But there is this: Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau, who kept his lineup intact even though he hinted at possible changes earlier in the day Thursday, was asked in the morning how he thought his team would respond after the disappointment of Game 2.
He candidly said he could only know that with a crystal ball.
After the game was completed, though, Boudreau said he’d learned only what he already knew about his squad.
"Well, I think it told me what I know, is that they're a great character team. This was a character win," Boudreau said. "For a tired group, it was a really good game for us.
"The will on this team, I've said all year from day one, you could see it in training camp, you could see it in the preseason games. You guys would talk to me and say there's a different aura about this group. We haven't won anything, but there is a resiliency that's as good as most."
Tired? Maybe. Beaten? Not at all.

What's next for teams impacted by Mike Babcock's decision?

There was one team that considered briefly whether they should get in on Mike Babcock. It was a team with a coach they like, but considered joining the Babcock sweepstakes simply out of due diligence. When the best coach in the sport -- or at least one of the top three -- becomes available, it’s foolish not to consider it.
Along the way, they considered the alternative. What if they tried to get Babcock and didn’t succeed? What was the message to their coach? What would be the fallout?
“It was a very dangerous game to play,” said a source in that organization.
So they passed. The Toronto Maple Leafs and a few others most certainly did not, and now they deal with what’s next.
It was a wild ride for all who decided to get involved, a ride that concluded with Babcock's signing a remarkable eight-year contract worth $50 million to coach the Maple Leafs. It will go down as the contract that forever alters the coaching pay scale.
It also has an impact not just on the team he chose, but the one he left and the ones he passed on. Here’s a look at the teams impacted most by the deal and what’s next for them

Rapid Reaction: Canadiens 6, Lightning 2

TAMPA, Florida -- The Montreal Canadiens suffered the most crushing of losses Wednesday night when Tyler Johnson's buzzer-beater gave the Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-0 series lead. Instead of rolling over, however, the Habs came out like monsters out of a cage Thursday night and pummeled the home team 6-2 to avoid the sweep and keep their season alive.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Um, anyone see this coming?a
After losing all eight games they played versus the Lightning this season, the Canadiens poured it on in finally beating the Bolts. A season's worth of frustration, perhaps. The team’s leaders all had strong nights, Andrei Markovand Max Pacioretty scoring first-period goals before David Desharnais, Jeff Petry and Brendan Gallagher piled on with second-period goals, as the Canadiens raced out to a 5-0 lead.
Lightning goalie Ben Bishop, who had stopped 100 of 104 shots in this series entering Game 4, was pulled after Desharnais’ goal made it 3-0 at 5:08 into the second period, a weak one that popped in and out of Desharnais' catching glove. Bishop gave up three goals on 14 shots. But I would suggest that coach Jon Cooper also made the goalie change because he wanted to wake up his team, who for the second night in a row played a mediocre game. This time, however, it cost them.
WHAT IT MEANS: Two pertinent things about this lopsided victory for the Canadiens: First, they finally beat Tampa and don’t have go into the offseason having the Lightning’s perfect record against them hanging over their heads. Second, to bounce back with this kind of effort less than 24 hours after a crippling, heart-shattering loss with 1.1 seconds to go in the third period tells you about the character they have in the dressing room. That kind of loss, and especially to go down 3-0 in the series because of it, would have seen many a team wilt and take a knee the following night.
Also of note as we pack our bags and find our way back to Montreal, the Lightning have to be concerned with how they played in back-to-back home games. They’re still obviously in a great position to win this series, but their lackluster play over these two games is really a head-scratcher.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Max Pacioretty -- The Habs' star winger collected a goal and two assists, and his first-period tally was short-handed. He was flying all night and easily played his best game of the playoffs.
STAT OF THE GAME: Petry’s second-period goal was on the power play. I repeat, the Habs scored a power-play goal! They entered the game an abysmal 1-for-28 on the power play in these playoffs. It wasn’t a lucky goal, either -- the Canadiens moved the puck around very well before Petry hammered it home.
WHAT’S NEXT: Game 5 goes Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, the Habs hoping the best crowd in the NHL can help them avoid elimination for a second straight game.

Rapid Reaction: Capitals 2, Rangers 1

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals now have a chance to close out their second-round series against the New York Rangers in five games, after a 2-1 win in Game 4 on Wednesday gave them a 3-1 edge. The series shifts back to New York for Game 5 as the Presidents' Trophy-winning Rangers try to avoid making a hasty exit from the postseason.
What happened: The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the second period with a stunning sequence from their top line, but the Capitals' Andre Burakovsky then tallied twice to tilt the ice for the Capitals. A soft play along the wall by New York's Chris Kreider allowed Burakovsky to notch his first playoff goal in the second period, and a misplay by top defenseman Ryan McDonagh led to the second goal in the final frame. Speedy winger Carl Hagelin had a chance to knot the score at 2 with a penalty shot in the third period, but Capitals netminderBraden Holtby came though with a clutch glove save to preserve the Caps' one-goal lead.
What it means: The Rangers are in big trouble, staring down a two-game series deficit with confidence that seems to be waning by the game. Whereas the Capitals have dictated play throughout the series, the Rangers have failed to exploit their speed and skill against a jagged-edged Caps team that has been stingy in its own end. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has done his part; now he needs his teammates to step up and start winning those important one-on-one battles that the Capitals have dominated thus far in this series.
Player of the game: Burakovsky. The 20-year-old made a huge splash in Game 4, scoring both Capitals goals to seal the victory. And that wasn't all. The lanky winger was doing the little things right as well -- like when he got in a lane and blocked Kevin Klein's shot in the third period with the Caps keen on protecting a lead. Honorable mention here to Holtby (as per usual) and veteran forward Troy Brouwer, who has been an underrated yet impactful player throughout the first four games.
Stat of the game: Derick Brassard's beauty of a finish off the rush in the second period ended the Rangers' scoreless drought dating back to Game 2, a streak that lasted 100:05 minutes between goals. The goal prior to that one was also scored by Brassard, who leads the Rangers with five tallies this postseason.
Up next: Game 5, Friday at 7 p.m. ET, Madison Square Garden.

Rapid Reaction: Blackhawks 1, Wild 0

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Chicago Blackhawks narrowly defeated the Minnesota Wild 1-0 in Game 3 of this Western Conference second-round Stanley Cup playoff series Tuesday night at Xcel Energy Center. With the win, the Blackhawks have a 3-0 series lead.
How it happened: So much for a goaltending controversy in Chicago. Blackhawks' Corey Crawford was outstanding and finished with 30 saves to earn his first postseason shutout since Game 3 (34 saves) of the 2014 first-round series against the St. Louis Blues. On Tuesday, he made timely save after timely save and kept the Wild at bay the entire game. The Wild wanted, and needed, to have a strong start in hopes of gaining the early lead. Minnesota came out flying and created solid pressure on the Blackhawks. However, Chicago capitalized first and it seemed to quickly deflate the Wild. With Minnesota's Jared Spurgeon in the penalty box for tripping, Chicago's Patrick Kane beat Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk through the 5-hole to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 14:06 of the opening period. History was on Chicago's side, too. The Blackhawks entered this game with a 28-0-0 record when leading after two periods this season. Since the Wild couldn't convert in the second period on Tuesday, Chicago continued its streak en route to victory. Crawford also had a lot of help from his teammates, who were blocking shots and getting sticks in passing lanes all game.
What it means: It's do-or-die for the Wild. The Blackhawks have a chance to eliminate Minnesota with a victory in Game 4 Thursday night at Xcel Energy Center. There have been four teams in playoff history to erase a 0-3 deficit, including the Toronto Maple Leafs (1942), New York Islanders (1975),Philadelphia Flyers (2010) and Los Angeles Kings (2014). If Chicago wins on Thursday, or even this series, it will advance to the Western Conference finals for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.
Saves of the game: With the Blackhawks clinging to a one-goal lead midway through the second period, Crawford made a timely save to secure Chicago's advantage. Minnesota's Zach Parise sent linemate Mikael Granlund in on a breakaway with a nifty saucer pass. Granlund had plenty of time do decide where to shoot and snapped it off to the stick side of Crawford, but the goalie made a quick blocker save to stifle the quality scoring chance. Crawford came up with an even bigger save at 8:30 of the third period: Minnesota was pressuring and created a scramble in front of the Chicago net. Wild players were chipping away and the puck was about to trickle over the goal line, but Crawford reached out with his blocker hand and pushed the puck out of the crease.
The other masked man: Dubnyk was solid in his end, too. He also turned in a highlight-reel save early in a scoreless game when he stoned the Blackhawks'Jonathan Toews with a huge left-pad save with 13:20 remaining in the first period. When the final buzzer sounded, however, it was Crawford and the Blackhawks with the win.
Special teams: Chicago's penalty kill came up big in Game 3. The Wild had three man-advantages, but Minnesota couldn't sustain any real pressure, and with the Blackhawks holding onto a 1-0 lead, their timely kills proved crucial. Chicago was called for too many men midway through the third period, but again, the Blackhawks killed it off.
Up next: The Wild will attempt to stave off elimination in Game 4 Thursday (8:30 ET) at Xcel Energy Center.

Rapid Reaction: Capitals 1, Rangers 0

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Washington Capitals blanked the New York Rangers for a 1-0 win in Game 3 on Monday night at the Verizon Center. The Capitals now have a 2-1 series edge heading into Game 4 on Wednesday night.
How it happened: The Capitals got on the board in the second period, when third-line center Jay Beagle got a favorable bounce as he swept behind the net and backhanded the puck off the skate of Rangers defenseman Keith Yandle at 7:31. Washington’s Andre Burakovsky registered his first playoff point with an assist on the play. The Rangers launched a furious comeback attempt in the third period, but Capitals goaltender Braden Holtbyyielded nothing, posting his second career shutout in the playoffs.
What it means: The Capitals held court on home ice, snagging a victory and stifling the Rangers offense. They didn’t even need Alexander Ovechkin on the score sheet. No. 8 was still an absolute force, however, with a slew of scoring chances and several big hits. The Rangers have to do a better job of containing him moving forward or he could single-handedly take over this series. Offensively, Rick Nash had one of his most active and engaged performances of the postseason, yet he could not find the back of the net. Breakout rookie Kevin Hayes turned it on in the final frame but couldn't solve Holtby, either.
Player of the game: Holtby of the Caps. Both goaltenders, Holtby and Lundqvist, have been phenomenal this series. But Holtby got the best of his Rangers counterpart with an 30-save effort to blank New York. Kudos to both netminders, who were unflappable in the waning minutes of the third period, despite the frenetic pace of play.
Stat of the game: The Capitals now are 19-1-4 when forward Beagle scores a goal, according to Comcast Sportsnet. Beagle’s goal was his first point of the series. The 29-year-old veteran now has three goals and seven points in 33 career playoff games.
Up next: Game 4 is Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET at the Verizon Center.
