Warriors
The Warriors enter Friday’s game at 47-12, ensuring their best 60-game start in franchise history even if they lose to the Mavericks.
Golden State leads the Western Conference by 4.5 games over the second-place Memphis Grizzlies, but the Warriors are just 5-3 since the All-Star break entering Friday’s game. Prior to the All-Star break, the Warriors were an NBA-best 42-9.
Stephen Curry’s MVP-caliber season has been a big part of that strong start. Curry ranks fifth in points per game (23.8), sixth in assists per game (7.8), first in 3-point field goals per game and first in steals per game (2.1) this season. Curry is averaging 25.6 points per game and shooting 51 percent from beyond the 3-point line in the seven games he’s played in since the All-Star break.
Curry scored 51 points the last time these two teams played, at Golden State on Feb. 4. The only other player who has ever scored more than 50 points against Dallas in a regulation game isKobe Bryant (62 points on Dec. 20, 2005), according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Friday’s game will be at the ORACLE Arena, where the Warriors are outscoring opponents by 15.6 points per game this season. That's nearly seven points better than the Trail Blazers, who rank second at plus-8.7 points per game at home. Only four teams in NBA history had a home points per game differential higher than 15.6, and three of those teams went on to win the NBA title.
The Warriors are an NBA-best 25-2 at home, including wins in 23 of their past 24 games at ORACLE Arena.
The Warriors’ offense has been on fire all season. They rank second in offensive efficiency and first in points per game (110.0). No team makes a higher percentage of its field goals than the Warriors (48 percent).
Mavericks
Dallas enters Friday’s game in sixth place in the Western Conference at 40-23. But are the Mavericks legitimate contenders? They are just 3-10 against the five teams ahead of them in the West, including 0-2 against the first-place Warriors. The Mavs have dropped five straight games to Golden State dating back to last season.
Rajon Rondo, who was traded to the Mavericks on Dec. 18, has zero free throw attempts over his past five games. Rondo’s last free throw attempt was on Feb. 20. His free throw percentage of 31 percent is on pace to be the worst ever by a guard in a single season (min. 50 FTA). Seattle’s Mark Radford currently holds that mark at 41 percent in the 1982-83 season.
According to Elias, Rondo’s struggles from the line are not as glaring as they might appear at first glance, considering that his average of 1.2 free throws per game this season is the sixth lowest among NBA players who have started at least 45 games.
The Mavericks hope to take a lead into the fourth quarter Friday, as they are 30–0 this season in games in which they led at the end of the third period. That’s the longest streak of its kind for any NBA team to begin a season since the Bulls started 2011–12 with 31 such wins, according to Elias.
