Tony Parker's work in paint fuels Spurs

Tony Parker was effective in the paint Sunday, reversing a nearly season-long trend and helping the San Antonio Spurs beat the Chicago Bulls 116-105. 

Parker scored a season-high 32 points, including 16 in the paint. The 16 paint points tied his season high from that area of the court.

He entered the game averaging 6.1 points in the paint per game, his fewest since 2001-02, his first NBA season, when he averaged 3.9 per game in the paint and a career-low 9.2 per game overall. 

Parker scored eight of his paint points on drives. He entered the game scoring 5.3 points per game on drives. 

Parker’s recent nose for the basket might be something to watch. In the Spurs’ win over the Nuggets on Friday, he was 7-of-11 from the paint, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, which noted that his 11 shots from that area were a season high.

The Spurs scored seven transition points in the first quarter, and their transition game became more productive as the game went on. They finished with 38 transition points, 15 of them off Bulls turnovers. The Spurs entered the game scoring 12.8 transition points per game, the third-fewest in the NBA. 

Better ball movement with Leonard 
The Spurs outscored the Bulls by 17 points with Kawhi Leonard on the court. They had 13 assists to four turnovers with him on the court, compared with one assist and three turnovers with him on the bench.

Here are the projections for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas. Our projection system takes into account, among other factors, drivers’ past performances at the current track, prerace on-track activity (practices and qualifying) and probability of finishing the race. All the data is then adjusted for the track type (in this case, a 1.5-mile superspeedway) and time of year.

Jimmie Johnson picked up the win last week at Atlanta. It’s the fourth time in his Sprint Cup Series career that he has won in the first two races of the season. In each of the previous three instances, he went on to win at least five races and the championship. Johnson is projected to pick up back-to-back victories, as he won each of the final two practices this week and didn’t finish outside the top 10 in any prerace workout.

Jeff Gordon won the pole for the second time in three races this season but will start the race in the back of the field. He was involved in a wreck in practice that will force him into a backup car. He’ll go for his 21st career win after winning the pole (not including races for which qualifying was canceled), which would move him into sole possession for the fourth-most such wins all time.

There have been 12 races on 1.5-mile tracks over the past two seasons, and they’ve all been won by either a Hendrick driver, a Penske driver or Kevin Harvick (for Stewart-Haas Racing). Harvick has finished second in both races this season and has five straight top-two finishes dating back to last season. He showed the most raw speed on 1.5-mile tracks last season.

Suh offers help to Dolphins' defense

Suh, who entered the NFL in 2010, has 36 sacks in his career. That’s the most among defensive tackles in that time. Second is Geno Atkins (who has played five fewer games than Suh) with 32. 

The Detroit Lions, the team Suh is leaving, had the top rushing defense in 2014, allowing 69.3 yards per game. The Dolphins finished 24th in rush defense, allowing 121.1 yards per game. 

The Dolphins allowed an average of 2.96 yards before contact on rushes last season. The Lions allowed barely half that -- a league-leading 1.51 yards per rush before contact.

Suh had 8.5 sacks and 10.5 disrupted dropbacks last season. The Dolphins’ defensive tackles last season (Randy Starks, Earl Mitchell and Jared Odrick) combined for 7.5 sacks and 14.5 disrupted dropbacks. 

Then again, Suh accounted for $22.4 million against the Lions’ salary cap, whereas Starks, Odrick and Mitchell consumed $10.3 million of the Dolphins’ cap space.

The Associated Press has selected Suh as a first-team All-Pro three times in his first five seasons. He is one of five defensive tackles in the past half century to be so recognized. 

Of the five, three are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame: “Mean” Joe Greene, Alan Page and Cortez Kennedy. (The fifth is Kevin Williams.) 

Suh's $60 million guarantee would be the most given to any defensive player. The contract ofJ.J. Watt has the highest guaranteed money, according to the Roster Management System, at $51.9 million. Next is Gerald McCoy, with $51.5 million guaranteed, and Patrick Peterson, with $48 million.
