Jets secondary poised for major turnaround

The New York Jets dramatically changed the look of their secondary with a pair of free-agent signings. 

The big one is the return of cornerback Darrelle Revis, who reportedly agreed to a deal for $39 million guaranteed. The other is also noteworthy -- the signing of Cleveland Browns cornerbackBuster Skrine.

Skrine had 14 passes defended or intercepted last season. Revis had 12 on the way to winning a Super Bowl. 

The Jets didn’t have a player record double-digit pass disruptions in 2014. They ranked 25th in the NFL in that stat. Players who lined up at cornerback had only two interceptions for them last season, tied for the fewest in the league. 

The Jets also ranked last in the NFL in turnovers forced with 13 and allowed a league-high 14 touchdown passes to tight ends. 

Bad without Revis, great with him 
The Jets allowed 31 touchdowns and intercepted only six passes last season. They had the third-worst touchdown-to-interception ratio allowed in a season in NFL history. 

With Revis, the Jets pass defense was terrific. They allowed the lowest completion percentage (56 percent) and the second-fewest touchdowns (108) of any team from 2007 to 2012.

Five players have multiple interceptions against Tom Brady over the past eight seasons. Revis, who spent last season as Brady’s teammate, is one of them. 

The Elias Sports Bureau notes that Revis is moving on after starting and winning the Super Bowl in his only season with the Patriots. According to Elias, the most recent players to start and win the Super Bowl in the only season in which they played a game for that team were Sean McHugh and Darnell Stapleton for the 2008 Steelers.

Suh offers help to Dolphins' defense

Suh, who entered the NFL in 2010, has 36 sacks in his career. That’s the most among defensive tackles in that time. Second is Geno Atkins (who has played five fewer games than Suh) with 32. 

The Detroit Lions, the team Suh is leaving, had the top rushing defense in 2014, allowing 69.3 yards per game. The Dolphins finished 24th in rush defense, allowing 121.1 yards per game. 

The Dolphins allowed an average of 2.96 yards before contact on rushes last season. The Lions allowed barely half that -- a league-leading 1.51 yards per rush before contact.

Suh had 8.5 sacks and 10.5 disrupted dropbacks last season. The Dolphins’ defensive tackles last season (Randy Starks, Earl Mitchell and Jared Odrick) combined for 7.5 sacks and 14.5 disrupted dropbacks. 

Then again, Suh accounted for $22.4 million against the Lions’ salary cap, whereas Starks, Odrick and Mitchell consumed $10.3 million of the Dolphins’ cap space. 

In the company of Hall of Famers 
The Associated Press has selected Suh as a first-team All-Pro three times in his first five seasons. He is one of five defensive tackles in the past half century to be so recognized. 

Of the five, three are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame: “Mean” Joe Greene, Alan Page and Cortez Kennedy. (The fifth is Kevin Williams.) 

Suh's $60 million guarantee would be the most given to any defensive player. The contract ofJ.J. Watt has the highest guaranteed money, according to the Roster Management System, at $51.9 million. Next is Gerald McCoy, with $51.5 million guaranteed, and Patrick Peterson, with $48 million.

Bears have issues with pass on both sides

Even though the Chicago Bears are eliminated from postseason contention, they got some national attention on Wednesday. 

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that the team is planning a starting quarterback switch from Jay Cutler to Jimmy Clausen. The Bears have not made an announcement related to a potential move. 

Cutler posted a 6.8 Total QBR and was sacked seven times in Monday night’s loss to the Saints. It was the second-worst quarterbacking performance of the week, better than only Johnny Manziel.

It was also the second time in six weeks that Cutler posted a Total QBR below 7.0 and the third time in that span in which he had a Total QBR lower than 25. 

Cutler had a 59.0 Total QBR through Week 11, which ranked 15th-best in the NFL. His Total QBR since then is 43.6, which ranks 21st. 

The cash value of Cutler’s contract this season is $22.5 million. That’s the highest in the NFL for a player who leads the league in both interceptions (18) and turnovers (24). 

Cutler has averaged a turnover every 33.3 snaps. The average NFL quarterback averages a turnover for every 65.3 snaps. 

The replacement 
Clausen hasn’t started a game since the 2010 season and the reason is likely due to his ineffectiveness then. Clausen went 1-9 as a starter for the Panthers that season. In those 10 games, he threw three touchdowns and nine interceptions, posting a league-worst Total QBR of 11.0 

In fact, that Total QBR is the lowest season-ending QBR for a quarterback for any of the nine seasons in which that stat has been tracked. 

Far from the only thing wrong 
The problems for the Bears have been magnified in recent weeks because of the team’s struggles. 

The other big issue they’re currently dealing with is that they can’t stop anyone. They lead the NFL with 409 points allowed. 

Their defense added a league-leading 7.6 expected points per game in 2012. Last year they fell all the way to 30th, costing the team about 6.6 expected points per game. They are again 30th this year, costing the team about 7.3 expected points per game. 

Opposing quarterbacks have completed 67.6 percent of their passes against the Bears this season, the second-highest completion percentage in the NFL. Their 3,811 passing yards allowed are the second-most of any team. They’ve allowed 33 touchdown passes, most in the NFL. 

Teams have exposed the Bears secondary with intermediate-length passes. The Bears have allowed 48 completions on throws 11 to 15 yards downfield, the most in the NFL. Opponents have completed 59 percent of passes thrown at least 11 yards downfield, the worst percentage for a defense this season. 

Opponents are putting up big numbers outside the numbers. They've allowed 18 touchdowns on such throws, one fewer than the team with the most, the Steelers.

Blake Sims' stats make case as best in SEC

Is Blake Sims the best quarterback in the SEC? The numbers say yes. Sims has posted an 87.0 Total QBR this season, second-best in the FBS behind Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. 

Since 2004, three SEC players have had a higher Total QBR in a season. Two (Johnny Manziel and Cam Newton) won the Heisman in those seasons, and one (Aaron Murray) is the conference’s all-time passing leader.

Sims has been extremely efficient. He ranks in the top 10 of the FBS in yards per attempt and first downs per attempt. 

He has also been able to find the end zone. With at least two more games to play, he has been responsible for 25 touchdowns, third-most in a season in Alabama history behind AJ McCarron in 2012 (31) and 2013 (28).

Since 2010, seven players have been better for a season, five of whom are current NFL starting quarterbacks. 

Another won the Heisman last season, and the seventh is currently on a practice squad backing up one of the five NFL starters.Sims’ ability to convert on third down starts with accuracy. He is completing 70.5 percent of his passes on third down, the highest for any SEC player in the last 10 seasons. 

He has not turned the ball over. Sims is one of two SEC players to attempt 75 third-down passes in a season since 2004 and not have an interception. The other was Tennessee’s Erick Ainge in 2006. 

Making plays with feet 
One thing that separates Sims is his ability to make plays with his feet. 

On passes thrown from outside the pocket, he leads the SEC in completions (36) and completions of 20 yards or more (seven) and ranks second in touchdown passes behind Missouri’s Maty Mauk. 

When the pass has not been there, Sims has shown he can tuck the ball and run. He has been sacked seven times this season, third-fewest for any Power 5 quarterback with at least 200 dropbacks. 

He has run most often on third down and leads the conference in rushing yards (113) and first downs (eight) on third-down scrambles. Two of his third-down scrambles have gone for 20 or more yards; the rest of the conference has a combined three. 

Sims and All-American wide receiver Amari Cooper have been a dangerous combination for opponents. 

Sims has targeted Cooper on 40 percent of his passes, and the junior has caught half of Sims’ touchdowns. When he is not passing to Cooper, Sims’ numbers are more in line with the FBS averages (completion percentage of 60.0 and yards per attempt of 7.3) than one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. 

A victory in the 79th Iron Bowl could go a long way toward Sims solidifying his Total QBR ranking as the SEC’s top QB.
