San Francisco Giants make statement with sweep of Los Angeles Dodgers

Is there such thing as a big series in baseball during May?
If there is, the San Francisco Giants just delivered a message to the Los Angeles Dodgers: Don't forget about us.
A week ago, the Giants were scuffling along at 17-18, while the Dodgers were riding one of the hottest offenses in the history of the game and looking like they'd run away with the division title, even with some injuries to the pitching staff.
The Giants won three in a row in Cincinnati heading into this three-game series and then did this:
  • Tim Hudson and four relievers combined for a 2-0 shutout.
  • Tim Lincecum and three relievers combined for a 4-0 shutout.
  • Madison Bumgarner and four relievers combined for a 4-0 shutout.
The NL West race is officially on, as the Giants improved to 7-2 against their rivals in 2015 and are now just 1 1/2 games behind the Dodgers. It was just the 10th time since 1914 the Giants spun three consecutive shutouts, although it's the second time this season. (They also had four consecutive shutouts from June 25-June 28, 2012, with three of those coming against the Dodgers.)
The Dodgers went 0-for-17 with runners in scoring position in the series but the exclamation point was Bumgarner crushing a Clayton Kershaw fastball over the left-field fence on Thursday for the first run of the game, and the only run Bumgarner would need. It was the first home run Kershaw had ever allowed to an opposing pitcher, and if you're into elaborate psychological interpretation, you can say this: Kershaw has the Cy Young Awards, but Bumgarner is Kershaw's daddy.
The two aces have faced off three times this season and the Giants won all three games. Kershaw pitched well enough, allowing eight runs over 20.1 innings, but Bumgarner was a little better, with just three runs allowed in 20.1 innings. That will set up the popular narrative that Bumgarner is the better pitcher than Kershaw, and it's certainly fun debate fodder for sports talk radio and TV shows because it pits the numbers folks versus the "Bumgarner has three rings" group.
The more interesting narrative, however, is how this sets up the rest of the season. Dodgers fans can point to the fact that the Giants held a 10-game lead in the division last June 10 only to see the Dodgers catch them and pull away in the final two weeks to win the division by a comfortable six games. That's simply a reminder that it's a long season and we're just a quarter of the way into it. Even with the return of Hunter Pence and the strong start that suggests this night be a new and improved Lincecum from the past three seasons, the Dodgers remain the big favorite to win the division. Before Thursday's game, FanGraphs projected the Dodgers to finish with 94 wins, the Giants with 84. Baseball Prospectus had the Dodgers at 96 wins, the Giants at 87.
In terms of odds, that means both sites give the Dodgers an 80 percent chance of winning the division. Why such a big edge? For starters, based on the underlying numbers, the Dodgers have been the better team, as seen in their season run differential of plus-48 compared to the Giants' plus-10. The FanGraphs projection system isn't buying Lincecum's hot start (2.08 ERA) but is buying the Dodgers' offense to keep playing at a high level. Carlos Frias and Mike Bolsingerare currently filling in the rotation after the season-ending injuries to Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu, and while they don't have much of a track record in the majors, they project to post similar numbers to Lincecum and Chris Heston or Matt Cain (when he comes back).
Oh ... and Kershaw is certainly projected to pitch much better than a guy with a 4.32 ERA.
If we look at three big keys for each team, I'd consider these:
Dodgers
1. The back of the rotation. Even if Frias and Bolsinger are projected to be adequate, they still have to prove that's the case. Expect the Dodgers to add a veteran starter at some point. The Cole Hamels and Johnny Cueto rumors will ramp up in July, but the Dodgers want to keep their top prospects. Look for a guy like Aaron Harang, currently pitching well for the Phillies.
2. Jimmy Rollins. He's been the one offensive player who has struggled, hitting .192/.274/.336. Improvement from him the rest of the way will help counterbalance some of the expected drop in numbers from guys like Adrian Gonzalez, Joc Pederson and Justin Turner.
3. Kershaw has to get on a roll. The Dodgers were 94-68 last year -- 23-4 when Kershaw started. They've already lost five games he started this season. The Dodgers look like a better all-around team so far in 2015; everything just hasn't gone right when Kershaw pitched like it did in 2014.
Giants
1. Need to find a solution for third base. It's not Casey McGehee, hitting .190 with two home runs. I'm not sure it's Matt Duffy, who has had some clutch hits but is really more of a utility type. If you start Duffy on a regular basis, that's four guys in the lineup -- Duffy, Joe Panik, Angel Pagan and Nori Aoki -- without much power.
2. Lincecum has continue to pitch well. They need that solid No. 2 to counter the Dodgers' Zack Greinke. You can't count on Cain, who might not be back until the All-Star break, or Jake Peavy, still sidelined with back issues.
3. Brandon Crawford, MVP candidate. He's been the unsung hero so far, hitting .303/.391/.515 with six home runs and 27 RBIs. With his defense, that's made him one of the best players in the league. If he continues at something close to that pace, he gives the Giants that third offensive weapon alongside Pence andBuster Posey.
Prediction: Kershaw soon goes on a roll. The Dodgers win the division by five games. And, hopefully, we get another Kershaw-Bumgarner showdown in the postseason.

Top stats to know: Bumgarner dominates

With each instance of postseason dominance, Madison Bumgarner is moving higher and higher up the ladder of baseball’s most elite performers on the biggest stage.

Bumgarner and Brandon Crawford combined to carry the San Francisco Giants to a 5-0 win over the Kansas City Royals in Game 5 of the World Series.

The Giants lead the series 3-2 with Game 6 set for Tuesday night in Kansas City, Missouri.

Bumgarner's amazing night
Bumgarner pitched the World Series' first shutout since Josh Beckett's series-clincher for theMarlins against the Yankees in Game 6 of the 2003 World Series.

Bumgarner is the first Giants pitcher to throw one in the Fall Classic in 52 years. The last was Jack Sanford against the Yankees in 1962.

Bumgarner joined Christy Mathewson as the only Giants pitchers with multiple shutouts in the same postseason. Mathewson did so against the Philadelphia Athletics in 1905.

What was unique about this one was that Bumgarner struck out eight and walked none. Bumgarner is the first to throw a World Series shutout that featured as many strikeouts and was walk-free.

Don Larsen came the closest, with seven strikeouts and no walks in his perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956.

Bumgarner's career World Series ledger now reads: four starts, four wins, 31 innings pitched and one run allowed.

He's the first pitcher to win the first four World Series starts of his career since Lew Burdette of the 1957-58 Milwaukee Braves.

Bumgarner did this with a masterful curveball, one that netted him six strikeouts, matching the most he's ever had in any start.

If this one looked similar to his last shutout -- the wild-card game win over the Pittsburgh Pirates -- it was, and not just because he allowed four hits in each. Bumgarner had six strikeouts with his curveball in that game, too.

The supporting cast
Crawford had three RBIs to pace the Giants offense.

How's this for a World Series-based quirk?

The last four times a shortstop had three or more RBIs in a World Series game, he was a member of the Giants. Rich Aurilia did so against the Angels in 2002 and Edgar Renteria had two such games (including one as the No. 8 hitter in a Game 5) in 2010.

Looking ahead
The Elias Sports Bureau notes the Game 5 winner of a World Series tied 2-2 wins the series 66 percent of the time (27 of 41).

Top stats to know: World Series Game 5

The Royals and Giants will be playing for the lead in the World Series when they meet tonight in Game 5.

Here are some of the statistical storylines our broadcast crew will be focusing on.

What’s at stake
The Elias Sports Bureau notes that the Game 5 winner of a World Series tied 2-2 wins the series 66 percent of the time, with the most recent instance being last season when theBoston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals.

However, it wasn’t that long ago that a team rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win a World Series. The most recent instance was in 2011 when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers in seven games.

The Giants have played in six previous World Series that were tied, 2-2. They’ve won none of them. The Royals only played in one- which they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in six games in 1980.

Madison Bumgarner top stats to know
The difference between Madison Bumgarner in the postseason at home versus on the road is stark and unusual.

Bumgarner is 1-3 with a 4.67 ERA in six career postseason starts at AT&T Park. He’s 5-0 with an 0.68 ERA in six postseason road starts.

Elias points out that Bumgarner is one of two active pitchers to win his first three World Series starts. The last to win his first four was Lew Burdette for the Milwaukee Braves in 1957-1958.

James Shields top stats to know
Since beating the Phillies in the 2008 World Series, James Shields has been very shaky in postseason play. He’s 1-3 with an 8.26 ERA in six postseason starts over the last five seasons. His big bugaboo is the home run- he’s allowed five in 28 1/3 innings pitched.

Shields had pitched at least five innings in every start this season but lasted only three innings in his loss to the Giants in this year’s World Series opener.

Giants hitter to Watch: Hunter Pence
Pence is 7 for 15 with five RBIs and three walks in this World Series.

Pence entered the World Series 0 for 11 in his career against James Shields, but was 2 for 2 against him, including a home run in Game 1.

Pence was 5 for 24 in at bats ending with a pitch in the lower half of the strike zone in the playoffs entering the World Series.

In the Fall Classic, he’s 5 for 12 with three walks.

Pence is one of three Giants to reach base at least 10 times via hit or walk and drive in at least five runs in a World Series since the team moved to San Francisco in 1958. The others are Chuck Hiller (1962) and Barry Bonds (2002).

Pence's seven-game World Series hitting streak is tied with J.T. Snow and Buster Posey for the longest in Giants' franchise history.

Royals hitter to watch: Alex Gordon
Gordon is 2 for 16, including 0 for 6 against left-handed pitching in the World Series. Gordon is 1 for 17 with six strikeouts against lefties in the 2014 postseason. Lefties haven’t been afraid to challenge him. He’s made 12 of his 16 outs against pitches that were in the strike zone.

Gordon hit .295 in at-bats against lefties that ended with a pitch in the strike zone during the regular season.

Giants win on a weird way to walk off

Game 3 of the NLCS was another terrific game between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals. It just happened to have a bizarre ending.

Randy Choate threw away Gregor Blanco's bunt, allowing the winning run to score in the 10th inning in a 5-4 win for the Giants. The Cardinals had rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie, but once the bullpens took over, scoring was halted until the Giants broke through.

The unusual nature of the game-ending play
Choate's error marked the third time that a postseason game ended with an error by the pitcher. The other two instances occurred in 1914 (the Boston Braves defeated the Philadelphia Athletics and 1969 (the New York Mets defeated the Baltimore Orioles), both in the World Series.

In fact, in each of the five previous instances in which a batter reached on an error to end a postseason game, that team went on to win the World Series (note there were two other game-ending errors, including last year's obstruction play in the World Series, but the batter did not reach as the result of them).

Good way to start
The Giants scored four runs in the first inning, the first on an RBI hit by Hunter Pence and the last three on a first-pitch double by Travis Ishikawa.

Ishikawa has changed his approach for the postseason and is netting positive results.

During the regular season, he swung at the first pitch in a plate appearance only 30 percent of the time.

Ishikawa swung at the first pitch 15 of 23 times this postseason.

He is 4-for-8 in this series and 6-for-21 in the postseason.

The Giants were 4-for-25 in the first inning of games this postseason prior to Game 3 of the NLCS. They went 4-for-7 in this game.

Giant effort from the bullpen
Four Giants relievers combined to throw 3⅔ scoreless innings after Tim Hudson allowedRandal Grichuk's tying home run.

Sergio Romo induced the final out, getting Matt Holliday to ground to third with a man on first in the top of the 10th.

Romo got the win after netting the loss for his one-batter effort in Game 2, when Kolten Wong beat him with a home run.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy's use of Romo in that spot was smart. Since July 22, right-handed hitters are 7-for-51 with 21 strikeouts against Romo.

The Giants bullpen has a 2.22 ERA and a major league-best 0.78 WHIP this postseason.

Looking ahead
There have been 86 previous instances of a best-of-seven series being tied 1-1. The Game 3 winner has gone on to win the series 71 percent of the time (61-25).
