Harden dominating ... at the free throw line

Let's put James Harden's free throw shooting exploits this season into perspective.

Harden went 21-of-22 in Monday's win over the Indiana Pacers.

Harden has had two games with at least 20 made free throws in the past five days. The rest of the NBA has yet to have one such game all season.

If Harden had another game with 20 makes this season, he'd be the third player with three such games in a season in the past 50 seasons. The only two players currently on that list are Jerry West (1965-66) and Kobe Bryant (2005-06).

He's the fourth player to have at least two such games in the past 20 seasons, along with Bryant, Kevin Durant (2012-13) and Dwyane Wade (2006-07).

Harden has now made 606 free throws this season. Only one other player has more than 400 makes (Russell Westbrook, 448).

The Elias Sports Bureau notes that Harden can now say, "I've had the NBA's past three regular-season games in which a player made 20 or more free throws."

He's the only player in NBA history who can say that.

The 6-foot-5 Harden will become the fifth player 6-5 or shorter to lead the NBA in free throws made since the NBA and ABA merged in 1976. The other four are Allen Iverson (6-0), World B. Free (6-2), Adrian Dantley (6-5) and Pete Maravich (6-5).

Harden is shooting nearly 87 percent from the free throw line. The average NBA player entered the day shooting 75 percent. That equates to Harden making about 80 more free throws than the average player would have on the same number of shots.

Lastly, how hard is it to shoot that many free throws that well in a game?

Harden is the second player to take at least 22 attempts and shoot 95 percent or better in the past eight seasons. The other was Dirk Nowitzki, who was 24-of-24 from the free throw line against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

Westbrook's triple-double tear continues

Russell Westbrook continued his torrid season with another 30-point triple-double Friday night against the Hawks.

Westbrook joins elite company

With Friday's 36-point, 10-rebound, 14-assist outing, Westbrook racked up the ninth triple-double in his last 30 games. In the last 40 seasons, only Michael Jordan has compiled more in a 30-game period (12 in 1988-89), according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Westbrook joins Jason Kidd, Magic Johnson and Fat Lever with nine in 30-game stretches.

This game also marked Westbrook's fifth 30-point triple-double this season. Over the last 30 seasons, only Michael Jordan has more in a season after putting together 10 such triple-doubles during the 1988-89 campaign. The only other players with at least five such games in a season in the last 30 years besides Westbrook and Jordan? LeBron James and Magic.

Westbrook's four 35-point triple-doubles are tied for the third most in a season in the last 50 years, according to Elias, behind only Oscar Robertson (six in 1966-67) and Jordan (five in 1988-89).

Westbrook's nine triple-doubles are three times as many as any other player has this season.

Westbrook without Durant

With Kevin Durant being "removed from basketball activities," as GM Sam Presti announced on Friday, the Thunder will continue to rely on Westbrook to be their main offensive force.

Westbrook has played 1,837 minutes this season and about 61 percent of those minutes have come without Kevin Durant on the floor (1,123). By comparison, Westbrook played just 3 percent of his total minutes without Durant on the floor last season (41 of 1,412).

The Thunder have outscored opponents by 9.3 points per 100 possessions with both Durant and Westbrook on the court but just 3.0 with only Westbrook in the lineup. Oklahoma City is 18-9 when both stars play but 16-11 with just Westbrook after Friday's win over the Hawks.

This season Westbrook has averaged 33.9 points per 36 minutes with Durant on the bench compared to 22.3 per 36 with Durant on the court. Westbrook's shot attempts also have increased from 18.8 to 25.2 per 36 minutes without Durant.

Payton also makes triple-double history

He has a way to go to match Westbrook's triple-double accomplishments, but Magic rookie Elfrid Payton made his own triple-double history on Friday by becoming the first Magic player ever to record triple-doubles in consecutive games.

Payton also became only the seventh rookie in NBA history with back-to-back triple-doubles, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, and the first since Antoine Walker in 1996-97. Besides Walker, Payton joins a list that includes Jason Kidd, David Robinson, Magic Johnson, Alvan Adams and Oscar Robertson.

Warriors' brand of team ball dominates

The Golden State Warriors entered Wednesday night ranked second to the Atlanta Hawks in percentage of field goals that were assisted.

On Wednesday night against the Hawks, they were second to none.

The story of the Warriors' 19-point win over the Hawks wasn't the flash of Stephen Curry or Klay Thompson (the latter of whom didn't play). This was a game in which their version of team basketball dominated.

The Warriors had 39 assists on 44 baskets. Their 88.6 percent assist percentage was the highest in a game in the NBA this season. They scored 26 transition points, two more than their league-leading average this season.

Curry finished with 16 points and 12 assists. His 12 assists resulted in 28 Warriors points. He entered the night averaging 18.4 points created off assists, fifth-best in the NBA.

The Warriors have 17 double-digit wins against teams with winning records this season. No other team has more than 12.

Instead of Curry doing the scoring, the Warriors got big contributions from Harrison Barnes andAndre Iguodala. Jump shots were the key to their success. The Warriors outscored the Hawks on jumpers, 74-39.

Barnes scored 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting. That's the best he's ever shot in a game in which he took at least 13 shots. He scored 19 of his game-high 25 points on jumpers.

Iguodala was 9-of-12 from the field for 21 points. It's only the second time he's scored 20 points in a game this season. It's also the third time in his career he took that many shots and made at least 75 percent of them. The other two instances were in 2010.

Wade's midrange game carries Heat

The Cleveland Cavaliers are bringing out the best in Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade.

Wade had his fourth 30-point game of the season, his second against the Cavaliers, in Monday’s rout in Miami. He has scored 25 points or more in six straight games.

Wade was 13-of-18 from the field on Monday. It’s the second time in the past six seasons (and the fifth time in his career) that he made that high a percentage of shots (72.2 percent) while taking at least that many shots from the field.

Wade won this game with his midrange shooting. He scored 16 of his points on midrange shots (outscoring the Cavaliers 16-6 by himself) and made the first seven shots he took from inside 10 feet.

He improved to 11-13 all time in head-to-head meetings with LeBron James. In those 24 games, Wade is averaging 28 points per game to James’ 29.3

This was an impressive all-around performance by the Heat, as they led the Cavaliers by 18 points at halftime. It was the Cavaliers’ biggest halftime deficit this season.

Wade got significant help from Goran Dragic, who finished with 20 points and nine assists.

Dragic drove to the basket 19 times on Monday, more than double his average in 10 games since being traded to the Heat, according to SportsVU player tracking data. Dragic was responsible for 26 points on drives, more than the Cavaliers totaled as team.

The Heat also cooled off Kyrie Irving, who made only five of his 15 shots from the field (after making 32 of 47 shots in his previous two games). Irving is 10-of-29 from the field in his past two games against Miami.
