The Rockets have an average margin of victory of 14.2 points, with no team coming closer than 11 points. In doing so, they have become just the second team in NBA history to start a season with five straight wins by more than 10 points, the last being Alex English’s 1985-86 Denver Nuggets.
A prolonged undefeated start has typically foretold playoff success in Rockets franchise history. The last three times Houston began a season at least 5-0, they reached the Western Conference Finals and twice won NBA Championships. All four of their previous 5-0 starts came in the Olajuwon era.
Scoring the Harden way
James Harden doesn’t need to make many shots. In fact, he hasn’t, shooting just 39 percent without making more than seven field goals in any of his five games. Despite this, he is third in the NBA in scoring at 27.2 points per game. Harden has done this by capitalizing at the line, making 10 free throws in four of five games and at a rate only Kobe Bryant has reached to start a season during the last 20 years.
Taking that further, over the last three games Harden has scored 86 points while making just 18 field goals. According to Elias, 18 field goals are the fewest in NBA history for a player with 85 or more points in a three-game span.
Harden has contributed more than just points. He is the just the fourth player in the last 30 years to average at least 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds over the season’s first five games.

• LeBron James scored only 11 points for just the 16th time in his career on Tuesday, marking his lowest output since Dec. 5, 2008.
• LeBron reached levels of futility on Tuesday last seen in his rookie season. He scored just two points against the Blazers over the final three quarters, something he hadn’t done since Dec. 3, 2003. Having now posted a negative plus-minus score in every game this season, James’ minus-31 plus-minus through three games is his worst to start a season since the first three games of his NBA career.
• James’ ex-teammate, Chris Bosh, is now flourishing as Miami’s primary option. Bosh’s four consecutive games with at least 20 points and seven rebounds is his longest such streak since he's been with the Heat.
• Anthony Davis posted 24 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks on Tuesday, his 18th career game with at least 20, 10 and three. This ties him with Tim Duncan and ranks behind only Shaquille O’Neal (59) for most games with those totals for a player before reaching his 22nd birthday (since blocks were first tracked in 1973-74).
• The Lakers have started 0-5 for the first time since 1957, when the team was in Minneapolis. On the bright side, Bryant scored 39 points and grabbed nine rebounds on Tuesday, becoming one of five players during the last 30 seasons to have at least 39 points and nine rebounds in his age 36 season or later.
